New York On the Move

by Tracy Kaler

The Road to a Bright Future, New York City, 2011

In a city like New York, we spend much of our time each day coming and going. Busing, train-riding, cab-hailing, and moving on two feet are more popular and usually the preferred forms of transportation rather than driving. The everyday life of a New Yorker isn't complete without being transported somehow, somewhere.

Time in transit is expected and unavoidable, and those daily moments will always be a crucial part of life for any city dweller. I would bet that each of us can remember a crawling train or sitting 30 minutes underground for an unknown reason. Or maybe we recall an only-in-New York experience in a taxi like getting stuck with a newbie driver who needed directions.

At times, trains, buses and cabs don't cooperate, so hoofing it to our final destination is the only option, even if it's a long trip such as getting from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

I'd say the average New Yorker uses a combination of all forms of transportation to navigate this city of five boroughs and 468.5 square miles. Some prefer the subway, others live by buses, and still others walk everywhere.

When I'm sporting uncomfy shoes or the trip is too long for my feet to take me, I typically take the subway, which is usually the quickest and most efficient method. But, when I've had enough of the underground experience in Manhattan, I hop the bus and enjoy the view. I save the taxis for those rare instances, like when I'm exhausted, sick, or carrying more baggage than I can juggle on public transportation.

Whichever mode is your fancy, there's no better way to observe the people of this city in action than when they're on the move, no matter how they choose to travel.
