Shop Sustainably in the East Village

SHOP NEW YORK
by Joann Jovinelly

Sustainable-NYC is located in the East Village

Now in its fifth year on Avenue A in the East Village, Dominique Camacho's practical gift
shop/café, Sustainable-NYC has matured from a funky lair of recycled gifts into a full-service general store of eco-friendly home and personal goods. The store has also expanded its café, offering additional seating, a gallery wall featuring rotating exhibits, free wifi, nostalgic tabletops made from vinyl records, and a limited menu.

With many items priced under $25, Sustainable-NYC remains a local’s paradise for scoring cool housewarming and shower gifts, readying for your next black-out party, finding the perfect spring/summer accessories, or grabbing a fair-trade coffee and gluten-free dessert. It’s hip, happy, and homemade (and a nice dwelling place for former hippies).

Those seeking an unusual gift — or at least one that starts a conversation — wouldn’t be disappointed with the selection, either. From organic clothing and eco-minded hostess and professional gifts, to fun accessories recycled from everything from candy wrappers to aluminum pull tops, Sustainable-NYC remains on the forefront of everything repurposed. With vinyl signs turned into messenger bags, welded keys into trivets, pencil stubs into picture frames, plus lines from popular eco-minded brands like Mighty Wallets and Tom’s Footwear, this downtown boutique is a green shopper's destination.

Newly expanded departments offer a wider selection of baby items and health/beauty products including nursery goods, blankets and clothing, plus a vast skincare line. There’s even a small selection of garden tools, seeds, and “gifts that grow” like grow-your-own herb kits and bulbs for planting.

Reusable bags, natural scrubbers, bamboo utensils, and other trendy takes on everyday household wares are dispersed throughout the store, which is virtually jammed with organic socks, T-shirts and hoodies, soy candles, cosmetics, personal accessories, and stationary — literally something for everyone. Best of all, since everything is fair trade and sustainable, you can feel good about buying and gifting it too.

Hi Taylor,
Thanks for your comment. I love the shops and local businesses in the E.V. Great idea--the best way to remember is to bookmark or write it down!
