New York After Dark: What to Do Past Midnight

Thoughts race through my head as I think about the many options available to me in New York City before a new workday begins.  In any other city in the world, making evening plans just before the clock turns to a.m. may seem ridiculous. But here, in, need I say it, the city that never sleeps, the night is young, and I'm ready to immerse myself in all it has to offer.

Maybe I've just gotten out of work, or maybe I'm deep into a night of partying, or perhaps I'm suffering from insomnia, again. No matter the circumstances, as a new day breaks, there is so much to do and see past midnight in Manhattan.

Cafeteria is one of my favorite eateries for a late-night snack or a full meal. The after hours menu features a variety of seafood dishes, creamy macaroni and cheese, burgers, as well as sweet and savory brunch options. The chic Chelsea restaurant also serves delicious cocktails, making it a perfect choice when perhaps not everyone in your group is as hungry as you are.

For the past 58 years, Veselka has been an East Village favorite among locals, visitors, and celebrities alike, to feast on pierogies (Ukranian dumplings), blintzes (Eastern European crepes), and borscht (beet soup), or linger over a cup of coffee at all hours.  Round-the-clock guests are often happy to engage in conversations about everything from art, to punk history, to socialism.  Free Wi-Fi is also helpful for work at any hour.

Midnight dates are popular at French Roast's uptown and downtown locations. Outside seating areas easily accommodate dogs who may be restless at night, and indoor seating is perfect for getting work done right up to the deadline.  This French bistro offers plenty of hearty menu selections, like quiches, sandwiches, salads, and soups, 24 hours a day.

Craving Chinese food?  Though most of Chinatown closes down pretty early, Wo Hop (open 10 a.m.-7a.m. daily), serves quality Chinese and Chinese-American food to starving downtown partiers as well as the late-shift restauranteurs and sommeliers looking for a yummy and filling snack after work.

For late night grocery shopping, Westside Market locations are always open, stocked full of your typical supermarket offerings, as well as a tasty and diverse homemade food selection, rivaling Whole Foods with its salads, dumplings, and small dishes.  Morton Williams also has several 24-hour locations, but fewer prepared foods available late at night.

Though Kate Spade may close its doors, its touchscreen window shopping allows you to order anything from their online catalogue and have it delivered to you by a courier at all hours.  Stuck out in the rain at 2 a.m.?  Order a cute umbrella (and maybe receive it from a cute delivery boy!).

Open until 5 a.m., live jazz plays at Fat Cat throughout the night.  Grab a $3 beer and lounge on the couches, or rent ping pong paddles, a Scrabble board, or billiards equipment to indulge in a late-night game.

Need to relax or in an emergency waxing situation?  Head to Juvenex Spa, which offers massages, brow shaping, facials and more, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For busy ladies who need a haircut or a manicure, the Korean chain Hair Party 24 Hours is here to help. Enjoy a party with your girlfriends – check out the karaoke room in back while waiting for your nails to dry. Services are discounted between 6 a.m. and noon.

If you’re one of those who likes closing down the bar, think about staying past closing time, and hanging out at an after-hours party with bar and restaurant workers. These industry-only events are full of booze and debauchery, people ready to let go after a long night at work with pushy NYC patrons, and definitely a unique experience for those not familiar with the service industry.
