For me, one of the many fascinating aspects of fall in New York is how the temperature can climb from the cool 50s to a warm and sunny 75, all in one day. I may stand among the minority in this sentiment, but there's an energizing quality in a brisk fall morning that I miss during the other seasons. And while the morning chill offers the perfect companion to a PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte), one can imagine the sartorial challenges presented during a day spanning 20 degrees. The solution? A perfectly lightweight, fall-friendly jacket.
The first chill of fall means it's time to bust out an item that has been hiding away in my closet all summer. I’ll give you a clue, it’s not the leaf-blower. I’m referring to my buttery soft black leather jacket. I’ve had mine for a couple of years now, and it’s softened fabric gets more comfortable each year.
If you don’t already own an old-standby, it’s certainly time to invest in your own leather jacket, especially when there are so many relevant design twists today. Take this ‘Seine Leather Bomber Jacket’ from leather expert AllSaints, inspired by a classic baseball jacket. The lightweight lambskin leather can easily be layered over a plaid button-down or silk blouse. Shop this look in the AllSaints SoHo store.

If you love the look of leather, but hold animal rights close to your heart, opt for the ‘Ariela Vegan Leather Jacket’ from Brooklyn-born company, Brooklyn Industries. The structured motorcycle jacket made from faux leather is complete with a matching faux shearling collar.

One trend that appears to be here to stay, at least for a bit, is camouflage. I never thought I’d say it, as I am known to scoff at any camo-inspired item my boyfriend owns, but some brands have managed to pull it off with sophistication, such as the ‘Boyfriend Fatigue Jacket in Camo’ from J.Crew. Inspired by vintage military, this lightweight look is ideal to take you from a.m. to p.m. Toy with the masculine and feminine –– pair it with a polka-dotted sweater.

Borrowing a true classic from the Brits, the Barbour jacket has emerged as a fall outerwear go-to, rivaling another UK brand that just so happens to start with a B. We have room for both here in NYC - but this time we’ll focus on the ‘Barbour Speedway Jacket’ from Barbour’s international label. Ever walk in between New York skyscrapers and notice the delightful (insert sarcasm) wind tunnel that forms? This jacket will protect you from that, comfortably. But with its lightweight waxed waterproof cotton, you won't get overheated during the warmer parts of the day. Pick it up from the American classic, Orvis, located in Midtown, who has partnered with Barbour for more than 25 years.

Whether your preferred style is military, motorcycle, or classic with a twist - there’s an option for everyone. So stick with what you like or try something new. That’s another great part of the fall, it’s the season for adding a fresh look.
