Spring in NYC never seems to last long enough. Between late-winter blizzards in March and the oncoming humidity of summer, there’s only a short window of time in which the days are bright and sunny, and the nights are cool and comfortable. Make the most of this beautiful and fleeting season with these six fun ways to welcome spring in NYC.
Visit the Macy’s Flower Show.
Most New Yorkers are familiar with the famous orchid show in the Bronx, but the Macy’s Flower Show is the perfect Manhattan alternative. From March 26 to April 9, the Macy’s flagship location in Herald Square will be transformed into a magical wonderland filled with carefully crafted displays and exquisite floral creations. Welcome spring in NYC with a casual stroll around this elaborate indoor garden.
Take in the view at a rooftop bar.
I love a good rooftop bar in NYC. Wintry winds make it difficult to party twenty stories above the city, but the warmer months are prime time for rooftop drinks and socializing. My favorite spring and summer pick is 230 Fifth, which offers a swanky atmosphere, a great cocktail menu, and one of the best views of the Empire State Building.
Dine at a sidewalk cafe.
Now that we won’t be risking frostbite anymore, spring in NYC marks the beginning of one of the city’s best weekend traditions – dining outside. Get your friends together and enjoy the fabulous weather with outdoor seating, bottomless brunches, and people watching. If you’re lucky, you can score a table at one of my favorite brunch spots, Root & Bone. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant has delicious Southern comfort food and a charming, rustic vibe inspired by Lowcountry living.
Cheer on the Yankees or Mets.
Having grown up playing sports, few things scream “Spring!” to me like a Sunday afternoon at the ballpark. Whether you score box seats or tickets in the nosebleed section, welcome spring in NYC by cheering on one of the Big Apple’s baseball teams. The Mets host their opening day on April 3, followed by the Yankees on April 10. Take your pick – just make sure to root for the home team!
Check out the Tribeca Film Festival.
New York Fashion Week may be over for now, but the Tribeca Film Festival is another chance to preview the next big wave of pop culture hits. Between April 19 and April 30, you can watch movies before they’re released in theaters nationwide, and perhaps spot some A-list celebrities gracing the red carpet.
Get your grub on at Mad. Sq. Eats.
One of my favorite food festivals in New York City is Mad. Sq. Eats. The springtime market runs from April 29 to – May 26 and features pop-up stands from some of the city’s most delectable eateries. Visit the Urban Space website for this season’s lineup of participating vendors. Personally, I’m hoping to welcome spring in NYC with a Beijing-style street crepe from Mr. Bing and a red velvet ice cream sandwich from Melt.
