For as long as she can remember, Amy Lynn Zanetto has had music in her blood and longed to perform. As lead singer of Amy Lynn & the Gunshow –– the NYC-based Memphis-Motown-Soul-Rock band –– the powerhouse songstress is a force to be reckoned with on stage. Originally from Connecticut, she escaped to New York City in 2001, and got her start in the world of theater, performing roles like Rizzo in the European tour of Grease and Emily in the national tour of State Fair. Since 2007, she’s made use of her vocal chops every holiday season in the wildly popular Radio City Musical Hall Christmas Spectacular.

Inspired by singers like Etta James and Janis Joplin, the songstress jammed earlier this month with her six musical gunshow mates during their CD release party at a packed Joe’s Pub, practically blowing off the cabaret’s roof. After nearly 90 minutes of original upbeat tunes such as “Clearly It’s Me,” and the title track from the new album, Don’t Trip on the Glitter –– a demanding house impatiently awaited one final song.
Alarmingly (literally!), due to an earsplitting fire alarm sounding right before the group’s encore, the building was forced to evacuate and all of us (Amy Lynn & the Gunshow included) ended up rallying on Lafayette Street. After which, the band brought down the audience for a second time, playing Britney Spears’s “Toxic” like I’ve never heard before.

She moved to New York in 2001, resides in Forest Hills, Queens with her husband, band co-founder, songwriter, arranger, and super sax player Alex Hamlin, and their two furry felines.
Recently, I caught up with Amy Lynn and chatted about the “Gunshow” and her life in New York City.
TK: So, you founded the band because you and your husband often played separately, and spent too much time apart. What an ideal solution! How did you come up with the name “Amy Lynn & the Gunshow?”
AL: The name “Gunshow” stems from a joke my husband Alex and I have with one another. You walk up to someone and ask, “Do you have tickets to the Gunshow?” Then they say, “What Gunshow?” To which you reply, “This Gunshow!” And then point at your flexed bicep. There is an element of irony since all our guys in the band are pretty slim. And it’s just a fun, easy name to remember.
TK: What’s the most exciting thing about being a singer in the New York music scene?
AL: The best part is the energy of the people you meet at every show. New York is filled with so many different humans who are filled with hope, desire, and resourcefulness. We are all here for different reasons, but we all share living in the greatest city in the world where anything is possible.
TK: Any plans to return to theater?
AL: I am always open and ready for the perfect role. Theater and I are not done.
TK: Why did you choose Forest Hills, Queens for your home base?
AL: I like the fact that we are close enough to the city, but still have our own little haven 30 minutes away.
TK: What’s the best-kept secret in your neighborhood?
AL: Martha’s Country Bakery! The cupcakes are better than Magnolia [Bakery].
TK: Uptown or downtown?
AL: Downtown! Best music venues, SoHo shopping, and my favorite restaurant, One If By Land, Two If By Sea.
TK: What’s your favorite thing to do in NYC?
AL: I’ll give you three because it’s hard to pick a fave. Thrift shopping, catching a show or trying a new restaurant.
TK: I know that heels have become somewhat of a trademark for you, which is your favorite pair?
AL: I live for a stiletto, but also have a hankering for wedge boots. My cobalt blue Stuart Weitzman heels I wore for my wedding are my favorite, because I can wear them again and again!
