Avocado toast is having a foodie moment right now. This dish proves that thoughtful pairing of simple and fresh ingredients can produce the ultimate culinary experience. Starting with the foundation of bread and mashed avocado, chefs add a sprinkle of sea salt, chili flakes, or a few drops of oil, taking flavors to the next level. It’s light, healthy, and satisfying. But we certainly won’t judge if you include a couple of slices of bacon in your order. Here’s where you can find the best avocado toast in New York.
The Penrose, 1590 2nd Ave
Opened by Ruairi Curtin of Wilfie & Nell, this Upper East Side Irish gastropub serves its avocado toast with a little twist. Poached eggs and chili flakes are plated around the smashed avocado on white bread, waiting for you to assemble into a mouthwatering meal. For a heartier bite, top off with smoked bacon or smoked salmon (we recommend!). Since the Penrose’s offers inventive takes on the classic bloody Mary, we suggest the bacon bourbon Mary made with bacon-infused bourbon alongside your avocado toast.
The Smith at Lincoln Square, 1900 Broadway
If you find yourself in Lincoln Square when a craving for avocado toast strikes, head to The Smith, a restaurant known for serving up superb bistro classics and craft cocktails. Offered on the breakfast and brunch menus, the light dish is made with organic whole wheat bread topped with avocado, local greens, red pepper flakes, lemon, and poached eggs. The special Smith blend coffee never disappoints either. In weekend mode? Balance out your avocado toast with a delicious bloody Mary. The Smith has three more locations in Manhattan.
Flinders Lane 162 Ave A
Honoring the essence of modern Australian cuisine, Flinders Lane offers a culinary experience that you can’t find anywhere else in NYC. Here, avocado toast is prepared with poached eggs and marinated cherry tomato. What sets this dish apart from the rest is dukkah, an Egyptian blend of spices, herbs, and nuts. Incredibly delectable on its own, the meal can be ordered with tea-smoked salmon, adding another level of flavor to enjoy. Wash down with a tall glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
Black Slate Coffee + Kitchen, 121 Madison Ave
Recognized for its first-rate cuisine, Black Slate Coffee + Kitchen is a place where diners can enjoy a friendly, neighborhood vibe in a modern chic setting. At the top of the restaurant’s “breakfast all day” menu is avocado toast. The beauty of this version rests in its simplicity – avocado smash is served on country bread and topped off with a dash of smoked salt and drizzle of chili honey. Round out your nourishing meal with a refreshing iced almond matcha latte.
By Chloe, 185 Bleeker St
The vegan menu at By Chloe is satisfying enough that even the most hard-core carnivores walk away with full, happy stomachs. A commitment to sustainability extends to the restaurant’s use of locally sourced ingredients and eco packaging. The smashed avocado toast is one of the fresh and delicious items you can enjoy with a totally clear conscience. Rich avocado is spread on a slice of 7-grain toast and topped with seasonal veggies and savory almond Parmesan. Complete your green culinary excursion with a cold-pressed juice such as The Merry Prankster made with watermelon, prickly pear, apple, lemon, and sea salt. By Chloe has additional locations throughout NYC.

Avocado toast sounds a tid bit creative. I myself haven’t thought of that unique combination. I guess it’s safe to say that having such a meal like that 1st thing in the morning on an empty stomach will be friendly on your digestive system, simply because it’s considered light food and not difficult to digest. It also sounds like a semi-vegan meal. Am I right? 🙂
