SHOP NEW YORK
If a shopping trip to rue St. Honoré in Paris doesn’t appear on your travel itinerary anytime soon, you can take a brief jaunt to the Upper East Side of Manhattan instead.
Just off Madison Avenue, you’ll discover Yuta Powell, an intimate salon in a charming townhouse, featuring women’s clothing and accessories. Powell thoughtfully curates a luxurious collection by designers such as Herve Leroux, Jean Paul Gaultier, Emanuel Ungaro, and Caroline De Marchi, whom I met the evening I visited.
Belgian-born De Marchi is the creative force behind her elegant handbag collection, which has clearly been influenced by her adventurous albeit nomadic life. She’s lived in destinations like Egypt, Brazil, Milan, and, of course, Paris.
De Marchi uses rare leathers from Genoa and integrates bright blocks of color into many of her designs. No detail gets overlooked –– the interior of each bag is just as beautiful as the exterior.
Upon touching the Cubo (above), I could immediately tell the amount of thought and craftsmanship that goes into the making of this bag. From the shape to the hand of the leather to the stitching and metalwork, I could plainly see that this handbag is special.
Although I adore the entire collection, my absolute favorite is the Bali, which boasts more structure. I feel as if this purse might be the quintessential accessory, and could easily transition from day to night, making it the perfect choice for a busy city girl.
|The “Bali” is my personal pick.|
Yuta Powell is the only New York City shop that sells Caroline De Marchi’s collection. You can also find her creations at select boutiques around the world.
Perhaps, one day I’ll get to visit her shop in Paris. Until then, Yuta Powell on the Upper East is just across town.
