Hard work pays off. Esé Azénabor is living proof that with enough ambition, dreams can come true. The Nigerian-born, Canadian transplant debuted her F/W collection at New York Fashion Week, just three years after founding her eponymous label. And I can vouch –– the NYC crowd loved what they saw.
The odds were in my favor last Friday at noon when I landed a front row seat next to a friend of hers from Dallas, where the self-taught designer is based. While enrolled in grad school, Azénabor took to her sewing machine and traded her accounting career for the launch of her ready-to-wear line. (I’m not fond of numbers, either.)
Shown at the Affinia Hotel near Penn Station, the luxurious 2015 fall/winter collection was inspired by Henry VIII. We saw swing skirts, jumpsuits, wide legs, capes, and plunging necklines make a statement on the runway. Characterized by metallics, beading, and dramatic damask and jacquard fabrics, quite a few of Azénabor’s creations would wear well on the red carpet, which could be where we’ll see them next.
I think we’ll hear a lot more from this young designer. Take a peek at a few highlights from her show.
