Need a change? Here’s how to reinvent yourself in New York.
New York City is unique in that it’s one of the few places where you can truly reinvent yourself time and time again. Whenever I go back to the suburbs where I grew up, I can’t even go to the mall without running into old classmates or other people I know – and although I’m a completely different person than I was in high school, it doesn’t translate in my hometown. Having the ability to evolve is one of the many reasons I love NYC. Want to change your lifestyle, image, and goals? Here’s how to reinvent yourself in New York without ever leaving the city, and without being looked at the same way, by the same people.
Move to a different neighborhood.
Any New Yorker will tell you that living in Manhattan is nothing like living in Brooklyn, or any other borough. It never ceases to amaze me how each corner of NYC has its own pace, culture, and vibe.
I’ve only lived in the Upper East Side, but simply moving from the East 60s to the East 80s – a measly 20 blocks away – makes a huge difference. By changing apartments, you’ll find new neighborhood bodegas, restaurants, bars, and a different type of crowd, allowing you to have a fresh start.
Revamp your wardrobe or hairstyle.
It’s funny. In the suburbs, I remember kids in high school would show up wearing a new outfit or sporting a new hairdo, only to have others make comments like “That’s not even her style.” In New York City, your style is whatever the hell you feel like wearing in the moment.Want to rock the Bohemian look for one season, then switch to prim and proper the next? Go for it. There’s no style rule or box that anyone has to be confined to indefinitely, and your style identity can change as often as you want it to.
How awesome is it that no matter what career you want to pursue, NYC offers an endless stream of opportunities to help make it happen? Whether you want to work in real estate, the arts, entertainment, nonprofits, medicine, or any other area, you can change your career path without changing your zip code.
Switch social circles.
We are the sum of the five people with whom we spend the most time. So by spending more time with a new social group is a great way we can reinvent ourselves, our perspectives, and our lifestyle. From workout fanatics to business moguls, you’ll find them all in New York City.
Which way? It’s all up to you.
