On a great day in New York, it looks like everyone around came off a catwalk or straight out of a store’s window display. Street style is always on point in Gotham, but when you see a real fashionista in NYC, you can recognize that she lives and breathes fashion. With all the different style options available, what are the key signs you’re looking at a fashionista? Luckily for you, we’ve figured out a basic guide and put it in a handy blog post. You know you’ve found an NYC style maven because…
Even when sporting head-to-toe leather, she feels as if she’s wearing a snuggie, and it shows. A fashionista owns her outfit and wears it as easily as a second skin. Stilettos, studs, distressed denim, whatever – if it’s something she loves and feels comfortable in, she’ll don the outfit with ease.
She ignores “the rules.”
Don’t wear white after Labor Day? Says who? A New York City fashionista knows the only real rule of good style is that she wears what feels true to her. So even if a magazine claims never to mix certain patterns or colors, she’ll do it anyway because it feels right. And, we might add, she looks fabulous doing it.
A trendsetter always has at least one accessory. Whether it’s a pair of stand-out sunglasses or a scarf to ward off the cold, she has the perfect statement piece to complete her look. And speaking of statement pieces…
All of her non-clothing items are in one place.
Her handbag game is on, so much so that she doesn’t always have a traditional bag. You’ll never see a well-dressed New Yorker grasping for, well, anything because her phone, wallet, keys, etc. will be in one place. Whether the bag is a clutch, backpack, belt bag, or something else altogether, that’s entirely based on her personal style.
She’s on the go.
It’s New York City! Of course, she’s always on the go. Where? It varies, but a stylish New Yorker dresses appropriately for braving the elements (whether it be a hot, cold, rainy or snowy day) and wherever she’s headed at the same time.
The real sign of any New York City fashionista isn’t what labels she wears (if she’s wearing any at all), it’s the confidence she has to rock all outfits. Her opinion is the only one that matters, but by all means, don’t let that stop you from paying a compliment to a fellow chic dresser. A confidence boost from a supportive source is always welcome.
And, when in doubt, she wears black.
Because sometimes New Yorkers know when to stick to the basics.
