The name Jonathan Adler may sound familiar to you. No, he’s not your cool Jewish uncle (though he could be…), he’s an awesome designer using geometric patterns, fabulous designs, and popping colors to brighten up your small apartment. According to his website, Adler dedicates himself to bringing style, craft and joy to your life, and he certainly does to mine! My favorite aspect of Adler’s business is his dedication to other people’s happiness with his products. He is the author of four books, including My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living, as well as the Happy Chic book series: Jonathan Adler on Happy Chic Colors, Jonathan Adler on Happy Chic Accessories, and 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life.

The iconic potter, designer, author, and personality launched his first ceramic collection in 1994 at Barneys New York, expanding into home furnishings in 1999, opening his first namesake boutique in Manhattan. Adler now has over 25 stores worldwide (5 are in NYC), but his New York inspired designs are at the true heart of his commitment to impeccable craftsmanship and irreverent luxury.
Jonathan Adler’s NYC stores lure you in, with bright colors and hypnotizing patterns that push you past window shopping at his SoHo flagship location. You just want to be close to his designs.
Successful first as a potter, Jonathan Adler’s pottery is chic and highly stylized –– nothing else looks like his work. Cookies jars, vases, and decorative pieces are all available and range in price from $50 to over $500. Even the smallest accent piece can help add a level of sophistication to a room.

Jonathan Adler’s signature embroidered throw pillows retail for over $100, a splurge for apartment decorating, but an excellent one at that. The handmade wool and velvet pillows are ideal additions to even the cheapest of walk-up apartment futons and come in a wide variety of designs to suit any interior design preference. A luxurious gift to yourself or to give, you really can’t go wrong with one of his many pillow designs.

If you want a welcome rug outside your apartment, don’t go to Jonathan Adler –– your NYC neighbors will take it. But for inside under the coffee table, in the kitchen, or to warm your feet next to your bed when you wake up each morning, Jonathan Adler’s handmade llama’s wool woven rugs are fantastic. Especially for those who are renting and can’t paint or make major room changes, the colorful and patterned rugs spice up any space and can of course be rearranged or swapped for the seasons for even more variety.

Adler and his partner, Barneys Creative Ambassador Simon Doonan, live with a Norwich Terrier named Liberace, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of Adler’s designs can be rather flashy. Mirrored furniture especially looks like it would have belonged in Liberace’s own pad, but is certainly worth the splurge in a mod NYC apartment, especially if you want it to look a bit bigger, thanks to your furniture’s reflections!

At the forefront of modern design, Jonathan Adler’s tech accessories are also worth coveting. At price points lower than many of his home goods, an adorable (and practical!) iPhone case will run you $28 with a laptop sleeve at $30. My Jonathan Adler iPad case travels wherever I do, and I’m constantly receiving compliments on the cool and functional accessory. The new On the Go chargers ($28) charge your iPhone and portable devices without a wall outlet and keep your battery going up to 70% longer. More time to show off your cute case? Or maybe just to read this blog.

Jonathan Adler also vends wholesale, so look for his designs at some of your favorite NYC boutiques.
