|Kitchensurfing offers same-day dinners cooked by a personal chef for just $25 a plate.|
The New York life is a busy one. Lately, I find myself trying to accomplish about five more things in a day than I have time for, so some evenings I can’t spare even 30 minutes to get in my kitchen for a quick meal. (And I love to cook!) So typically, Mike and I end up ordering a few mediocre and usually overpriced dishes via Seamless like millions of other New Yorkers (delivery can be hit or miss), just because we’re hungry. But just last week, we discovered Kitchensurfing and I was super impressed with the quality of the food and service, not to mention how easy the process was from start to finish.
For $25 per person, Kitchensurfing sends a personal chef to your apartment to prepare dinner. In New York City, $50 for two people is less than what you’d pay in many restaurants. (Think Handmade Pappardelle with Roasted Mushrooms and Tuscan Kale Salad, or Pan-Seared Trout with Roasted Beets, Potato and Green Bean Salad.)
You choose your menu from three options –– meat, fish, or vegetarian. I was torn between the three choices, because honestly, all of the meals sounded delish. But since we had eaten salmon earlier in the week and Mike is a carnivore, I chose Seared Petite Filet with Roasted Cauliflower Purée and Wilted Baby Spinach. Yum.
You also select your dinner time. We chose 8 p.m. since we tend to eat late. The idea is that the chef is in and out in 30 minutes. (He or she arrives, cooks, serves, and cleans up before you finish eating.) You do nothing except sit down and enjoy it and wash your plates at the end of your meal. This I can handle!
Admittedly, no one has cooked in our kitchen before, so this was a first for me. When I opened my door and met Chris Massiah, I knew that Mike and I were in good hands.
Chris was awesome. He came in with his prepped ingredients and his own pots and pans. I supplied the dinnerware, utensils, and wine (of course!), and he did the rest.
He cooked, plated and cleaned up, leaving my kitchen spotless. And not only is he one helluva cook, but Chris was great company! We chatted about our dogs, Brooklyn, and all kinds of other stuff.
Even though I was a little apprehensive about a stranger coming into my apartment and hanging out in my kitchen, I would absolutely book a KS personal chef again. Kitchensurfing did me a huge favor at the end of my busy week. After all, Friday nights should be a time to unwind and relax, and not stress over dinner.
