Who doesn’t love lobster?
Bring together some of the city’s most innovative chefs under one roof, prepare and serve one of the most luxurious foods on the planet, and you’re sure to experience one of the most over-the-top food-filled nights in recent NYC history. Foodies, chefs, media, and fellow lobster lovers congregated Saturday night on the edge of Chinatown for the First Annual Lobster de Mayo at Capitale, a magnificent bank turned event space on Bowery. The evening brought great fun and amazing eats and drinks, and benefited an even greater cause: New York’s own City Harvest, a food rescue organization.
Presented by Homarus, lobster supplier to many of NYC’s finest eateries, and hosted by the lovely Katie Lee, the four-hour shellfish feast featured table upon table of mouthwatering lobster recipes prepared in front of thousands of hungry eyes and appetites. Dishes like poached lobster, lobster salad, lobster mac ‘n cheese, and lobster tacos tempted our tastebuds as we perused station after station of pro chefs from restaurants like Betony, Tao, ABC Kitchen, Catch, and Marea.
I was super excited to meet Howard Kalachnikoff, Gramercy Tavern’s Executive Sous Chef, finally, and to taste the restaurant’s dish: lobster salad with pickled aji dulce peppers. Last month, I chatted with the chef on the phone, and it was fantastic to connect with him in person. Gramercy’s simple finger food turned out to be one of my favorite tastes all night. The lobster was the star!
Hot tunes played while the crowd nibbled and sipped top-shelf tequila and vodka cocktails. As if pounds of lobster weren’t enough, I was fortunate to have access to the VIP lounge with an oyster bar! But before long, I was so full I couldn’t eat any more. I almost asked for an oyster and lobster doggie bag for the subway ride home. Sure wish I had some of that lobster –– RIGHT NOW.
