Even though 30 W. 21st St. may be a hotshot condo building today, it wasn’t always a desirable address in a high-rent area of town. Back in 1985, it wasn’t even a residence.
The address was the location of the popular 1980s nightclub, Danceteria. You may recognize the name from the ’80s flick, Desperately Seeking Susan, starring Madonna and Rosanna Arquette. The mega-club was a hangout of Madonna’s on and off the movie set, and she frequently worked there as a hat-check girl.
It was in Danceteria on 21st Street where M strutted her stuff during the club scene in the film. She also had her first live performance in the club, singing and dancing to “Everybody.” Remember that tune?
The building, which lies between 5th and 6th Avenues in the Flatiron section of Manhattan, is a world of difference today from 1985, when the movie hit theaters. It was sold in 2004 for $12.5 million, and again in 2007 for $25 million to Beck Street Capital. Alma, as it’s called, contains 12 floor-through lofts priced between $5 million and $10 million. According to Streeteasy.com, only three units sold in 2008.
What does the Material Girl think about her old stomping ground becoming overpriced condos? Let’s just say that 30 W. 21st St. was a tad more interesting in the ’80s when maid service, pet spas, an in-house “lifestylist expert” and other excessive amenities didn’t exist in that building or in any Manhattan apartment. I’m sure Madge would agree.
