Yes, I went to the Tony Awards!
I’m still coming off the high from my weekend. In case you’re just catching up on posts, I won an Instagram contest sponsored by United Airlines about two weeks ago, and I went to the Tony Awards last night. You can read more about my win here. Yesterday, my niece Jesse and I savored 16 hours of nonstop fun and events a la Tony Awards style.
THE DRESS REHEARSAL…
Our Tony Awards day started with the dress rehearsal at 9:30 a.m. at Radio City Music Hall. I can’t say that the rehearsal is as spectacular as the show, but it’s a close second. Many of the A-listers aren’t in attendance, but they have stand-ins who read from the teleprompter instead. Still, I highly recommend snagging ticket sometime if you can. The producers accept the awards and give the acceptance speeches, putting their own hilarious spin on the thank-yous and such.
Kristen Chenoweth and Alan Cumming did their entire hosting thang during the rehearsal, and were as funny then as they were during the live show.
After rehearsal, we grabbed a bite to eat and headed to DreamDry on West 57th Street to get our locks beautified. Our loose beach curls looked dynamite when we left the salon.
From there, we darted back to The Paramount Hotel on West 47th to apply makeup and slip into our Tony wear. The New York City winds kicked up on the way down Eighth Avenue and relaxed our curls some, but we still felt glam.
At last, we were all dressed! Traffic was pretty insane all over Midtown because of the awards, so we opted to walk in our flats and carry our stilettos until we made it to the red carpet entrance at Radio City Music Hall. We had to weave in and out of so many people on the way, but it was fun prancing through the city all dressed up.
Once we reached the tightly secured entrance, I told a police officer that I needed to enter to get to the red carpet, and he responded, “Congratulations! Can I come too?” We had our official passes in hand and entered the red carpet zone.
Jesse and I strolled on the red carpet and felt like celebrities! What a way to start our evening.
From there, it was time for the cocktail party with open bar. We went to the ladies lounge and relaxed for a few minutes, before toasting the occasion. I’d forgotten how spacious and cool the Art Deco-style lounge is at RCMH. It feels straight out of the 1930s.
We found our orchestra seats and settled in. It turned out that we were sitting in the same row as John Cameron Mitchell, who received a special Tony Award. We saw stars like Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Jennifer Lopez, Kelsey Grammer, and many others.
The live show was wonderful! I am looking forward to seeing award-winning Fun Home, The King and I, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which I didn’t get to see before the Tonys. Kelli O’Hara finally won a Tony (she’d been nominated a total of six times), and I was incredibly thrilled for her.
After the awards ceremony, we headed for The Plaza for the Tony Awards Gala. It was a beautiful night in New York City and this was the perfect ending to an unbelievable night.
My storybook night came to an end. My feet were tired, but I managed to keep these heels on until the end. Jesse and I left the Plaza and returned to The Paramount for a good night’s sleep.
I woke up this morning and the whole day seemed like the best dream possible. But today it was back to reality in the city of New York.

I still can’t believe I won a contest and went to the Tony Awards. Have you ever been? I guess it proves to enter contests because you never know what might happen!
