LIFE IN THE APPLE
With all the different taverns, clubs, and lounges available to New York City locals, it can be hard to choose a favorite, or decide where to go on a Friday night. But no matter how crazy our lives get and how indecisive we may be when it comes to our nightlife options, there’s one place that will always be the perfect standby – our neighborhood bar. Read on to find out why New Yorkers should have a local watering hole.
The low maintenance.
Getting ready to go out for a night on the town is an event in and of itself. Hair, makeup, shoes, jewelry, etc. Sometimes, even when I feel like going out and having some after-hours fun, I can’t be bothered to get all gussied up – especially after a rough workweek filled with all-nighters.
When people choose a local watering hole, it’s much less pretentious than a high-profile, glitzy nightclub, and comes with more of a laid-back, low-key attitude. There’s no need to dress up, fuss over accessories –– I’m even guilty of showing up without any makeup except mascara. That’s the beauty of having a neighborhood hangout. It’s very “Come as you are!”
Everybody knows your name.
“Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name…!” I couldn’t help quoting the theme song from Cheers, just because I never realized how true that line is until I moved to NYC. When you frequent any bar or pub, everyone from the staff to the other regulars will eventually get to know you, and you become like (an alcohol-infused) family.
In a city that’s constantly changing – not to mention, the countless number of people New Yorkers encounter on any given day – it’s nice to have your own familiar spot where everyone knows you and you feel most at home.
Bartenders are your best friend.
Whether it’s a heavier-handed liquor pour or the occasional free shot, it’s always nice to make friends with your local bartender. Nightlife in NYC is expensive, and every freebie counts. It’s also nice to have a place to go, even if you find yourself alone on any given night. Pop on over to your usual bar and hang out with the staff, because sometimes they’ll end up introducing you to other regulars or singletons. You never know who you might meet.
You’re guaranteed to have fun.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten dolled up to go to some hyped up new club, only to find out that that’s all it was – hype. So many nightlife places in New York City are overrated, and it takes a lot of time partying your way around in order to pinpoint the hidden gems. With your neighborhood bar, however, you know exactly what you’re getting and you can always rely on your local watering hole for a relaxed night out.
