|Introducing the flagel–credit|
A bike messenger cursing, a little yippee dog barking, a baby crying, someone screaming,”Betty, Betty” at the top of her lungs – it’s just another day in New York City. I am not on the street, but in my one bedroom apartment on the eighth floor in a quiet part of town with the windows closed, trying to concentrate. This ruckus is on top of traffic humming along and horns blowing several times an hour. I hate the horns, and by the way they are illegal in Manhattan.
Truth be told, when I actually leave this city and go to a calm and peaceful place, I find the quiet almost frightening. The eeriness of nothing is far more maddening than a few barking dogs or screaming children; as long as they are not in my co-op building! I thought it might be a good idea to escape for at least a quick jaunt, so I ran out to grab an early lunch. I am easily irritated on an empty stomach. Just ask my husband; food usually cures ailments and enhances my mood.
A delivery guy and an SUV driver were screaming obscenities at each other on West 90th Street while I was en route to get my flagel. What is a flagel you may ask? Good question. I just found out myself, and I am hooked.
It’s hard to believe, but after living in Manhattan for 4 1/2 years, and consuming bagels for as long as I can remember, I just discovered the flagel, or flat bagel. The flagel is crunchy but with the same flavor as its doughy twin. It is flattened before boiling and baking. Why? Who cares—I have become an overnight addict. Personally, I am not a fan of the large fluffy puffy bagels. I love this option because of the chewiness as well as the ease in creating a sandwich. Although some may think it is lower in carbs and calories, it isn’t. Damn…
For whatever reason, I don’t feel as full after eating the flagel vs. the bagel, and because slicing is difficult, one side is always paper-thin. Will I switch back to its more familiar counterpart aka the bagel? Probably not—the sound of the word alone is good enough for me.
