|Absolutely Fabulous is in theaters Friday!|
Whenever I think back on my days in London, there’s four things I always miss – British humor, terms of endearment (“Hello, sweetie darling”), London Fashion Week, and how a posh accent can make even the most inappropriate behavior seem glamorous. So when I was invited to my first NYC movie screening on Tuesday, I was thrilled that the film du jour was Absolutely Fabulous – a big screen adaptation of the iconic BBC sitcom from the nineties.
My plus one for the evening was my BFF Rae. We went to school and lived together in London, so we were both excited for an all-night British laugh fest. After settling into the comfy seats at Chelsea’s Bow Tie Cinemas, it was a huge surprise when Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley strolled into the theater to personally introduce the film. The ladies were warm, witty, stylish, and just as funny as their Absolutely Fabulous characters – minus the chain smoking and excessive chugging of champagne.
As the UK’s most hilarious bad girls, the movie revolves around the crazy antics and adventures of PR company owner, Edina “Eddy” Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and magazine fashion director, Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley). After allegedly “killing” Kate Moss at a fashion party in an attempt to sign the model to her PR firm, Eddy becomes Great Britain’s most wanted woman. Patsy then helps plan a dramatic escape to the South of France, where the two besties encounter random adventures and get into even more trouble – all, with a glass of champagne and cigarette in hand.

Throughout the movie, I was cracking up at the cheeky one-liners, slapstick comedy, brilliant subtleties, and the overall ridiculousness of Eddy and Patsy’s lives. I was also overwhelmed by the star-studded cast, and it seemed like the audience was cheering every few minutes as another celebrity made an appearance. One minute, I was laughing at Jon Hamm and Rebel Wilson; the next, I was squealing as some of my favorite supermodels filled the screen.
Having worked in London’s fashion industry, I must say seeing Kate Moss made me a bit giddy as she reminded me of the days when supermodels graced the covers of Vogue instead of reality stars. And like Eddy and Patsy, Kate looks just as amazing now as she did 20 years ago.
For those who love a good laugh and need to kick back with a lighthearted comedy, Absolutely Fabulous is definitely a must-see. I can tell you now that I’ll be binge watching the original TV series this weekend. And I’ve decided that I totally want to be Patsy when I grow up.
