|My view from ONE UN New York|
Escaping the frenzy of New York City life might seem impossible for Manhattan residents, but my venture across town earlier this week proved otherwise. I checked into the luxury West Tower of One UN New York at 1 United Nations Plaza, and experienced a one-night taste of the hotel’s Sky-High Weekends program, albeit on a Monday.
As expected, my spacious deluxe room on the 38th floor came equipped with myriad amenities such as a comfy king bed, luxurious linens, down pillows, a 40-inch HDTV, an elegant bath with a walk-in shower larger than some NYC living rooms, and a custom desk with wireless internet and an iPod docking station.
Now let’s get to the unexpected: the view. I’ve stayed in my share of upscale hotels, but no accommodations have ever boasted a panorama like this. I had read about these skyline views at ONE UN New York, but seeing the city from this vantage point was truly spectacular.
Later, I returned to the 38th floor for a personalized in-room feast with Tuscan White Bean Soup, Pan-Seared Salmon with Spinach and Beurre Blanc, Chocolate Layer Cake, and a 2010 California Pinot Noir from Patz & Hall. Every bite of food and every sip of wine was decadent.
If the wine, hors d’oeurves, and three-course dinner weren’t enough, I had more goodies in my gift bag. A package of oatmeal-cranberry cookies, a signature box of 16 Tumbador Chocolate Bonbons from the Brooklyn-based chocolatier, and an arty set of custom-made collectible NYC skyscraper postcards. These will hang on a wall in my apartment in the near future.
I was able to capture the sculptural skyline late afternoon into early evening, after dark, and in the wee hours. This is the first time I’ve ever seen the city transform from day to night up close, and it was stunning. On Tuesday morning, I awoke to a snow-dusted Manhattan.
My stay at this hotel was truly a treat! Aside from the fantastic accommodations and food, I can’t say enough about the staff at ONE UN New York. Every member was pleasant, obliging, and available. In fact, I left the charger for my brand new iPhone in the outlet adjacent to the bed, but didn’t realize it until I went to recharge my phone at home around midnight. I knew it was a long-shot, but I called the hotel on Wednesday and spoke with Myles in housekeeping. They had my charger and said I could pick it up at any time. That’s what I call top-notch service.

If you’re looking for a unique New York hotel experience, a hop, skip, and jump from Times Square but a world away, or, if you’re the discerning business traveler with a need to be close to midtown Manhattan, I recommend the West Tower at ONE UN New York, which is also family friendly. This tower is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. For rates, a full list of hotel amenities, and additional info, visit One UN New York’s website.

My room in ONE UN New York’s West Tower was complimentary, as were the food, drinks, and gift bag, but every word I’ve written is mine.
