Wednesday evening when I was flipping channels, I noticed Pilobolus was scheduled to perform on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Never heard of Pilobolus Dance Theater? They are a modern dance company based in Washington Depot, CT, but they tour around the world. The troupe was founded in 1971 by a group of Dartmouth students with no dance training. I’ve seen Pilobolus take the stage at the Joyce Theater in NYC, and I highly recommend seeing the company if it comes to a city near you. To watch these dancers in person is life changing.
Of course, I tuned in and saw their piece at the end of the hour, only to be wowed again. The company’s movements are characterized by athleticism and grace, and they use their bodies to create unusual shapes and forms, sometimes humorous and other times powerful, but always aiming to forge a human connection. If you’re a dance aficionado, you’ve probably seen modern dance before, but I assure you, you’ve never seen anything quite like Pilobolus.
Here’s the amazing piece from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. This clip is from Shadlowland, and it’s not only entertaining and fun, but it’s also quintessentially New York. Watch….you’ll understand.
I told you it was amazing 🙂 Now let’s get to what else has been going on around our great city…
