Welcome back to the Tracy’s New York Life podcast. This podcast features excerpts from my life in New York City….. New York is a cash city. There’s no doubt about it. In Gotham, you’ll notice people waiting at ATMs, and dollars and cents changing hands, because cash is king here, which is why you should never leave home (or your hotel room) without it.
I can promise you, at some point when you need money, you won’t have it. It happens to all of us. Ask locals, and they’ll tell you – keep money in your pocket at all times because when you’re short on cash, a bank machine will be a 10 or 15-minute walk in the opposite direction of where you’re going. And just like cash is essential to the New York lifestyle, so too is time, and 15 minutes is a long time to waste just to pick up cash.
Countless establishments, including some smaller mom-and-pop restaurants like Barney Greengrass on the Upper West Side, don’t accept credit cards, so always check the website or call ahead. Never assume that you can whip out your Visa and pay the bill.
In this podcast episode, I talk about eating a delicious Saturday brunch, going to pay the check, and realizing that I was short by a dollar and some change. I’d say that’s an embarrassing moment! When I advise you to have cash in your pocket no matter what, I speak from personal experience. 🙂
