The Lincoln Center area of Manhattan is and always will be a special place for me. One reason being, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is in the heart of the neighborhood. In fact, decades after I first set foot on that magnificent plaza, I am still completely smitten.
Although Lincoln Square (what this section of town is often called) is considered part of the Upper West Side, this sub-nabe is about a 30-minute walk or 10-minute train trip from my apartment. I wish I lived closer because I’d walk by every day, take a seat at that magical fountain more often, and make use of the David Rubinstein Atrium. This public space is an awesome spot to relax, work (free Wi-Fi!), or kill some time between appointments.
Last week, I attended an event at the atrium celebrating the exciting new stuff that’s happening. Aside from tasty nibbles and a few glasses of vino, I found three more reasons to love Lincoln Center…
1. The reimagined website…
Not that the website wasn’t well designed before, but the new site feels fresh and is super easy to navigate. It’s broken down into sections –– dance, music, film, opera, theater, family, festivals and programs. Visitors can access info about performances, buy tickets, and read about the center’s history. The site features new curated content, articles, and videos so we can learn more about art and culture. Browse upcoming events and read about the performers who take the stage each and every night.
I was toying around and found a wealth of cool and fun info, like this article, 11 Pieces of Advice for Performers from Audra McDonald. And two of my favorite dancers (Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild) are interviewed in Be Mine: 5 Artist Couples on Living and Performing Together. And the video at the end of this article is super fun…you must watch.
Ok, so maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but if you can’t already tell, I’m excited about this app. (And I’m not a huge app person.) You can pre-order drinks on this app (rather than waiting in a long line at intermission). I’m not quite sure how this will work since I haven’t tried it yet. But how awesome to not have to wait in line. (We spend hours of our lives in NYC waiting.) The Lincoln Center app will also give you the opportunity to get surprise seat upgrades, and this next feature tops all others –– you can check to see how long the lines are at the restrooms. (Love that one.)
There’s a detailed map to show all the venues (Lincoln Center is a huge complex) so you won’t get lost and miss a performance or go to the wrong theater. Plus, you can see what’s playing each day, including what’s FREE.
3. A Lincoln Center tour app to use from anywhere…
Take a customized tour of the campus from anywhere and at anytime. You can even tour from another state or country. Pretty incredible. If you miss New York and want to be in touch, this Lincoln Center tour app will bring you to New York digitally while providing tons of fun facts in the process.
If you’re at Lincoln Center in person, that’s even better. Take the 45-minute tour and savor every moment. Be sure to connect to the free Wi-Fi that’s available throughout Lincoln Center.
These new tools will enhance the Lincoln Center experience for all of us, and perhaps even bring new audience members who will fall in love with the Lincoln Center of today just as I fell in love with this New York City landmark more than 30 years ago.
