New York is a romantic city with an abundance of lovers’ activities during all seasons, but one of the most idyllic dates for any couple is a sail in the New York Harbor. Manhattan by Sail invited me and a guest to try one of their sails, and without hesitation I chose the Twilight Sail, offered at 7 p.m. daily. This was an unconventional Saturday night date for Mike and me and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Once we boarded and hit the water, the boat’s bar was open; we grabbed a few drinks and sat back and relaxed, taking in the sights and sounds of the water. Though I’ve sailed on the Hudson twice before, this was the first time on the stately and elegant Clipper City. One of the advantages of this particular boat is the size – it’s spacious and comfortable. This sail seemed to be smoother than what I remember on past trips. So, if you have any uneasiness about spending time on the water, the Clipper City Tall Ship may be a practical choice.
We took in the harbor sights including the downtown skyline, Governor’s Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, the in-progress World Trade Center, and of course the Statue of Liberty just before the bright sun began to set and the city’s buildings began to illuminate. The views were breathtaking.
A few tips when sailing
- Dress comfortably and wear flat shoes!
- Be sure to take a sweater or a jacket because the temperature can be considerably cooler on the water. There will always been a breeze.
- Don’t worry about nature calling. Clipper City is equipped with restrooms, so go to the bar and grab a glass of sauvignon blanc or a fancy cocktail since a full bar is available on this tall ship.
- Clipper City will sail rain or shine, but if the weather forecast is severe and the sail is canceled, you can reschedule your sail for a later date.
- Most of all – have fun!
Manhattan by Sail also offers daytime and nighttime sails, wine and craft beer tasting sails, champagne brunch and happy hour sails, specialty sails like the Lobster and Beer Lovers Sail, as well as private charters for a group. Schedule events like bachelorette parties, corporate gatherings, and even weddings. Catering services are available. Or, if you’re looking for a little alone time or perhaps ready to pop the question, grab your partner and board the Late Night Rendezvous Sail for that ultra-romantic evening for two.
Take your special occasion from land to sea on either the Clipper City Tall Ship for larger groups up to 150, or the Sheerwater Classic Schooner for a more intimate gathering up to 40, and celebrate on the water with New York in the background. It’s a romantic side of New York that you’ve never seen before.
