Visit the city at this time of year and you’ll understand why spring is my favorite season in New York.
Spring is my favorite season in New York. Actually, spring is my favorite season anywhere (actually, anywhere that experiences winter). After months of frigid weather, snow, ice, and puffy down coats, I feel like a new person when spring arrives. Here’s why I adore spring in New York City.
The city starts greening up.
Winters in NYC are dark, cold and pretty much colorless when it comes to nature. In spring, the gray, leafless branches begin to bud, and days later, parks transform and become a kaleidoscope of pink, green, ivory, yellow and other happy colors. And the gardens go wild. To put it simply – the city is gorgeous.
No more winter clothing.
No more thick parkas, heavy wool topcoats, and boots. Spring in New York allows us to dig deep into our closets for lightweight cardigans, denim jackets, pumps, and ballerina flats. Don’t lose the scarf just yet, though. You’ll still need a neck wrap through spring, especially in the evenings (albeit a cotton or linen one).
Who can be sad or angry on a picture-perfect spring day? I cannot! When I feel the sun hit my skin and detect the scent of spring flowers, I’m in a great mood. So too, are most other people in New York City.
Many New Yorkers remain inside as much as possible during the brunt of winter. If you visit New York in January and February, you’ll notice that streets and businesses aren’t as crowded as they are in spring, summer, and fall. But once the weather warms up, locals come out in droves – playing in parks, dining al fresco, jogging and biking, and carousing into the wee hours. There’s no point staying cooped up in a tiny apartment when it’s 65 degrees and sunny.
I visited the city in spring of 2007, only a few short months before I moved here. It was the most perfect spring in New York I can remember – 70 or 72 during the day and 50 to 55 degrees at night. I spent that week interviewing for a job, apartment hunting, and getting reacquainted with the city I fell in love with so many years ago. I knew then that my lifetime dream of living in New York was about to come to fruition. That beautiful spring week was one of the happiest in my life. Every year when late April rolls around, I remember that special week I spent rediscovering the city, preparing for my move here. For this reason alone, spring will always be my favorite season in New York.
Spring is my favorite season – how about you?
