If you’re anything like me, you look forward to starting the new year with a clean slate. A new year is not only here, but we’re in the midst of the last week of January (already), which means that 2018 is no longer “new.” What have you done so far to get this year off to a different, perhaps more focused, or exciting beginning?
I’m not referring to New Year’s resolutions. I’m not a big fan of those because usually by February (or earlier), they’ve become the thing I planned to do but didn’t. And then I end up feeling guilty or unaccomplished. Who needs to feel like that, especially at the start of a new year?!
Here in New York, we’re incredibly lucky because our milieu encourages creativity and change. NYC is an ever-changing place, so living in the city for any length of time almost guarantees changes in one’s own life. Whether we welcome those changes or try our best to avoid them doesn’t matter – here in New York City, they’re bound to happen.
What type of change? Well, besides the evolving cityscape, neighborhoods, and local businesses that span this enterprising city, personal changes happen all the time. Change can be a promotion. Accepting a different job. Moving to another borough. Becoming more socially responsible, or joining organizations and trying to meet like-minded people. Or even prioritizing something – like reading, exercising, or traveling more often. No matter how big or small, change (for the most part), is good and helps us grow. Starting the new year with a clean slate is one fantastic way to evoke change.
This year, I’ve laid out some career goals. I’d like to expand my freelance career and write for more outlets. I’d like to focus a little more time on my other website, and I’m considering implementing some changes to this site (haven’t worked out the details yet), so stay tuned. I want to travel to some places that I’ve never been to before, so in a few weeks, I’m off to Nicaragua for the first time. Who knows what the rest of 2018 will hold? Only time will tell.
What about you? Did you start this year with a clean slate in any aspect of your life?
I took a look at how anyone living in NYC can catch a fresh start in 2018 when I wrote my latest article on the Cubesmart city blog. Nope, you don’t have to change everything. One significant change is all it takes to feel as if you’ve started the year with a clean slate. Fresh eyes, ears, and ideas. It’s never too late! What’s stopping you?
