|For at least a year, I had to pinch myself daily. I couldn’t believe that I was really living in NYC.|
Time flies when you live in New York.
It took months, or maybe a year or two for the newness of living here to wear off. I’d stop and pinch myself for the longest time, wondering if I was dreaming and would soon awake from the best dream I could possibly imagine.
My husband had a saying. After we relocated to NYC, it was weekly to start and then monthly as time went on. Usually we’d be walking down some street, just the two of us. Always out of the blue, he would say, “We live in New York.” He’d announce this as if he was having some type of revelation. Each time, it was almost as if he was saying, “How did we get here?”
When life changes quickly and unexpectedly, and your way of living is opposite of what it was just days earlier, a reality check may be in order, or at least a good sharp pinch. Perhaps this phrase was just that. It was Mike’s way of communicating, “Stop and take it in. Look where we are. Look at what we are doing. Appreciate life here.”
That was 2007. Seems like yesterday, and seems like forever ago at the same time. Now, four plus years later, living in New York City has sunken in. But even so, I look forward to a day in the future when he says “We live in New York” again.
