What a fashionista should pack for a trip to NYC
New York and fashion go hand in hand––the city is, after all, one of the world’s style capitals. As much as you’d like to wear all of your favorite outfits during your time in NYC, you can only carry so much clothing, so many pairs of shoes, and a handful of accessories with you. The question is: what should go into your luggage? Here’s a look at what a fashionista should pack for a trip to NYC.
Aside from jackets and shoes, your pants will likely take up the most space in your luggage. Depending on your style and the season, you can go with dark or neutral-colored denim pants and shorts, lounge pants, or even tights when you need to layer. Wearing cotton leggings is also a good option if you’re short on luggage space, as these items won’t take up much room and they can be easily washed, dried, and worn multiple times during your trip.
Clothes with a Pop of Color
While New Yorkers do wear plenty of black, you probably don’t want to don an all-black ensemble for all your photos in the city. You can bring a colorful skirt, dress, or top to serve as the focal point of one of your outfits, but don’t forget solid-colored turtlenecks in the winter season. You can also pack a bright scarf or two that you can simply layer on top of your all-black outfit, adding a pop of color.
What specific spots are included in your itinerary and how do you plan to get from one area to another? If you’re planning to skip the cab and walk around a lot as New Yorkers do, then you should invest in a pair of shoes that offer optimum support. But prioritizing comfort does not mean sacrificing style. Find a pair of shoes that offer a great compromise between stylish and comfy. Ballerina flats, tennis shoes, and even low wedges can be both practical and attractive.
Clothes for Layering
Temperature variations are the norm in New York City, so think in layers when planning your outfits. No matter the season, you want to be able to quickly adjust your clothing to the weather and time of day. Tees, cardigans, pullovers, and trench coats work for spring and fall. In summer, you’ll want to wear breathable garments, preferably cotton and linen, but carry a light sweater because theaters and museums can get chilly. In winter, a cashmere sweater will do wonders under a warm wool coat or puffer jacket.
Sunglasses are the perfect accessory, boosting any outfit, even a pair of jeans and a polo shirt. Pack your favorites, perhaps a casual pair and a dressier pair. Wearing sunglasses can also help you look more put together after a late night out.
A Tote or Backpack
Carrying bulky bags like backpacks can seem out of place in many cities, but not in New York. Feel free to bring a bag or two that you can take with you as you explore the sights and sounds of the city. On days when you want to stay with neutral colors, use a leather backpack or tote bag. If you’re planning on wearing a dress, pack a bag that complements it, but still has enough room for the items you want to tote around for sightseeing.
New Yorkers have to deal with about 120 days of precipitation every year. Even if it’s supposed to be a partly sunny day, there’s always a possibility of rain. If you’re wearing an all-black ensemble, try a solid-colored umbrella or a printed raincoat. And don’t forget a pair of weatherproof boots to keep your toes dry.
